Despite the ongoing global pandemic, we are excited to safely be performing surgeries at our Mobile Surgical Hospital in Oaxaca. Every child living with a facial deformity deserves comprehensive surgical care and a chance at a new life. #neglectedsurgicalconditions

What is comprehensive care?
Mobile Surgery International is dedicated to healing the whole patient and recognizes that surgery is just one of many steps to ensure safe and optimal outcomes. Pre-operative and post-operative care is crucial to ensuring that a child born with a facial deformity, such as cleft lip and/or cleft palate is restored in body, mind and spirit. The following Comprehensive Care wheel details all of the steps that go into fully rescuing children from a life of needless suffering.

With careful consideration and attention to detail, our team is working hard to have all COVID-19 protocols in place to safely begin surgery next month! We cannot wait to see patients like Elias receive life changing surgery in just a few short weeks 🏥

Because of his cleft lip and cleft palate, Donaldo has not been able to breast feed properly causing severe malnutrition. Despite being 10 months old, he’s only the size and weight of a 2 month old baby. Without medical intervention, Donaldo would have died in ensuing weeks. The MSI team was able to teach Donaldo’s mother proper feeding techniques to improve his overall health so he can be scheduled for surgery. This is the advantage of having a team on the ground with a long term strategy for comprehensive care.

After an overnight journey through the Sierra Sur Mountains we arrived in the remote Zapotec village San Agustin Loxicha, Oaxaca. For many families, this was the first medical consultation their child had ever received. Many other children are being scheduled for surgical and comprehensive care appointments at our mobile surgical hospital in Oaxaca City.

Dr. Nicolas “Nico” Sierra is thrilled to be meeting his patients during screening. Mateo came 8 hours from Mazunte to be pre-screened for a cleft palate repair. Dr. Felix is a local dental resident who put together a treatment plan for Mateo and will work along side the MSI team to ensure comprehensive care.
